ProTom International will install its Radiance330 proton therapy system at the new Australian Bragg Centre (ABC), Adelaide Australia. The Australian Bragg Centre will be a purpose built facility to be established within the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI) in Adelaide, South Australia. Work has commenced on the centre, to be located within a new 15 storey building in the $A3.6 billion Adelaide Bio Med City alongside the new Royal Adelaide Hospital, SAHMRI’s existing building, the University of Adelaide Health and Medical Sciences Building, and the University of South Australia’s Health Innovation Building.
ProTom was chosen in late 2017 to pioneer proton therapy treatment in the region. This $USD42 million installation will include two gantries and one fixed beam treatment room. The ABC will operate as a clinic as well as a research facility, the commencement date likely for early 2024. Funded by the Commonwealth of Australia, it will be the first proton therapy center in Australia and the Southern Hemisphere, expecting to treat more than 800 patients from across Australia, New Zealand and the region. The Australian Government is currently funding 50 patients per year to travel to US for proton therapy treatment. ( Rob Debelle needs to check this number).
The ProTom Radiance 330’s precise proton therapy system installation in Adelaide will allow Australia’s radiation oncologists to refer patients for targeted cancer tumor treatment with minimal damage to surrounding healthy tissue. This makes it a particularly preferable treatment option for children. In addition, the Radiance330 will be used by SAHMRI researchers as they continue to develop new ways to diagnose and treat cancer.
